A deficiency is a lack of certain nutrients such as vitamins and minerals in your body. This can be diagnosed by a blood test organised by your GP.
A nutritional deficiency may be due to a number reasons including:
- you are not eating enough of a certain nutrient in your diet (this can happen for lots of reasons)
- you have greater requirements for certain nutrients due to perhaps, a medical condition
- medications may be interacting with your regular absorption of nutrients
A Dietitian can help with preventing and managing deficiencies by working with you to ensure you are well nourished. Where necessary, they can advise you on the use of supplements to correct a deficiency.
